My Grandma’s Vintage Sewing Machine March 17, 2010

My grandmother loves sewing. She used to make my pleated seersucker skirts for my high school uniform. She also loves making dresses and blouses. Until now, she still uses her vintage sewing machine which is made by Singer. She didn’t see the need to move on and use the electric or automatic ones. According to her, nothing beats the original, and learning to use the newer models would just take up so much time.

The sewing machine is older than me, and given its age, it actually looks and works great. My grandma takes good care of it, making sure to put oil on its wheels to make sure that it runs smoothly and efficiently. I remember playing with it when I was a child, putting my feet on the pedals, until my grandma sees me and scolds me for fear of wounding my hand on the needle.

Unfortunately, I never learned how to use it. It’s a good thing that I suddenly developed an interest in dressmaking, and I have my very own sewing machine that I could use. Using the vintage type makes me feel more like a seamstress, and the craftsmanship is superb. One of these days, I’ll ask my grandma to teach me how to use it, so that I would be able to sew her clothes.
