Creative Cake Making March 17, 2010

Baking started out as my mom’s past time. No one taught her how to bake; she just bought dozens of cookbooks and experimented with the different recipes. She noticed that a lot of her friends were asking her to make cakes for their birthday, anniversary, or Christmas parties. Shortly after, my mom decided to venture into a cake making business. The most memorable cake that she made for a client is the Statue of Liberty fondant cake.

The client’s daughter was leaving for New York City and she organized a farewell party. She wanted the cake to be memorable as well. Since she knew that my mom was a skilled baker and a talented artist, so she commissioned her to make the very challenging cake. My mom already has experience in creating artistic and themed cakes, but this is her most difficult project so far.

The cake is not just a simple round cake. It is shaped like the Statue of Liberty, carefully designed and molded by my mom. I realized that making cakes is more than just a hobby, it is also an art. It takes skilled hands and an artistic mind to be able to come up with an edible, miniature version of New York’s finest statue.
